Colonial Williamsburg

For vacation this year I was blessed by a dear friend with the use of her time share in Williamsburg Virginia.  I have always wanted to visit the colonial sites at Williamsburg and the kids were excited to go to Busch Gardens and Watercountry USA.

I purchased the 7 day pass that allowed us to enter and leave each site as we chose and it allowed us a lot of freedom.

One of our days we went to Colonial Williamsburg.....much to the dismay of my kids.  They whined and complained but I think we had a little bit of fun at least.

Our first stop was a tour of the Capitol.  The original building burned down and was rebuilt on the original foundation.

My favorite room was the court room in the lower level of the Capitol.

Prisoners charged with felony crimes were held at the local jail....It was interesting to learn that part of the jail was the jailers house where he lived with his family.  The back part of the building had jail rooms where prisoners would stay for no longer that 3 months (court was held quarterly).....

The structure that looks like little steps was the potty.....

After touring the jail we walked back around to the main street area and toured the apothecary.....

And just look at these soaps....aren't they neat!  I bet I could make them :)

We walked and toured and the kids complained some more so we had a "snack" break....

Drew just HAD to try a ham biscuit.....which was pricey.....which he could not eat because it was too dry (even with mayo) AND it was choking him so I had to choose...waste 5 bucks or lose a kid....guess I will keep the kid....

We also went into the little shop and the kids had some fun (don't tell them they had fun though) trying on hats....

I had to pay Morgan....another 5 bucks gone.....to allow me to take a picture of her with this hat on.

Another fun part of the day was at the garden.  The kids had little maps that they could get stamped when they toured a site and could turn the map in for a prize. When we entered the garden they were told they had to work for their stamp....they had to draw water from a well...place the water in a bucket...take the bucket to a larger bucket and dump the water in....

Morgan at age 14 would have been marriageable material in the colonial days and since the women would be the ones carrying the water she got to experience carrying 2 filled buckets using this shoulder support....

We also went to the Folk Art museum.  The building was once used as a hospital and was the first (or one of the first) hospitals for the insane.

In one part of the building there are some old cells and equipment that demonstrates the evolution of mental health care through the times.  The remainder of the building the Folk Art museum...

We enjoyed are day at Colonial Williamsburg but it wasn't our absolute favorite day.....if you ever plan to visit with kids I would recommend doing the kids orientation tour (which we didn't do....) and other child friendly activities.  I just tried to wing it and we had fun but I think it could have been better.

Thanks for looking.....will have a cake to show you soon :)

Love,
Bronwyn
